Once a section of Farmington, Avon was independently established in 1830. It takes its name from the Avon River in England. It is a community rich with residential, cultural and business opportunities in the shadow of Hartford.
Carefully planned and protected residential areas feature spacious lots of rolling lawns and woodlands. There are large, traditional homes in a variety of contemporary styles and quiet, comfortable condominiums and apartments.
The commercial center of Avon is on busy Route 44. There is a diverse selection of restaurants and retail establishments, including Old Avon Village, a charming collection of well-preserved and renovated colonial shops, and Avon Marketplace, which has trendy clothing and gift shops, and restaurants.
About 95 percent of Avon's public high school students go on to higher education. Public and private colleges, secondary schools and preschools in Avon and nearby communities offer additional educational opportunities.
Avon is equally committed to the cultural growth of its community. Several organizations enhance the quality of life through charitable work and development of the arts. Cultural features include The Farmington Valley Arts Center, a modern science center and a busy public library. The town also has a nearly five-mile section on the 40-mile Farmington Valley Greenway on the abandoned Boston and Maine rail line. Walkers, joggers, rollerblade enthusiasts, bicyclists and cross-country skiers all enjoy the greenway. |
