Suffield is a small agricultural community on the Connecticut River and Massachusetts border in north-central Hartford County. It was incorporated by Massachusetts in 1674, and annexed to Connecticut 79 years later, when it was among the world's largest suppliers of tobacco. The first cigar factory in the country opened here in 1810.
Residents take pride in preserving their typical New England village, which features a lovely green and Main Street dotted with 18th and 19th century homes. New homes are sprouting up in outlying areas of town and around existing historic architecture. Enchanting Suffield Village is quintessential early America with lovely examples of colonial and Victorian architecture, tree-lined streets and small, inviting shops.
Residents have made a significant investment in their public school facilities, which include two elementary schools, a middle school and high school. Suffield Academy, a boarding and day high school, serves students from across the United States and many foreign countries.
The Parks and Recreation Department provides recreational, educational, athletic and social programs to residents of all ages. The Suffield Players, a community theater, does three productions each season at historic Mapleton Hall in northeast Suffield, and an arts council sponsors exhibits and receptions for local artists.
Interstate 91 provides convenient access to urban areas like Hartford and Springfield, and a 15-minute commute to Bradley International Airport. |
